Build a GTM job shortlist from constraints and evidence
Use a blank worksheet and three dated employer examples to separate a real mismatch, an evidence gap and an unanswered question before applying.

A useful shortlist tells you where to spend the next hour. It should distinguish a role that conflicts with a fixed constraint, a role where your evidence is incomplete, and a role that deserves a focused follow-up. A shared title or familiar tool cannot make those decisions for you.
This exercise applies that method to three employer postings checked on October 26, 2026. The listings are real; the candidate and worked decisions are fictional. The result is a record you can inspect and revise, not a ranking of employers or a prediction of who will get an interview.
Download a decision record you can reuse
Download the complete exercise, or open each file:
| File | What to do with it |
|---|---|
| Blank shortlist worksheet | Duplicate once per role; enter source facts and your evidence in separate columns. |
| Three source cards | Read the dated employer facts and open the full original listings. |
| Candidate and decision rules | Apply the fixed fictional profile before checking the worked answer. |
| Worked comparison | Compare reasons, next questions and conditions for revisiting each choice. |
The CSV contains blank entry fields and values only. It needs no account, paid tool or code. Keep a private version for your own search; a public portfolio should use synthetic or appropriately redacted evidence.
Separate facts, personal constraints and interpretation
Write these in different fields:
- Employer fact: what the posting actually states, with the source section and check date.
- Candidate input: a fixed constraint, a preference, a concrete work example or an evidence gap.
- Decision: your interpretation of those inputs and the next action it supports.
For the exercise, Alex lives in Albany, needs a fully remote role and will not relocate or commute regularly. Alex has five years in revenue operations and analytics, with production integration and reporting examples. The inventory also states specific gaps and preferences. None of this describes a real applicant.
Do not quietly change the profile to make an attractive role fit. If a preference is flexible, call it a preference. If an employer condition is unclear, record the question instead of filling the gap with a convenient assumption.
Compare three current sources without treating the titles as equivalent
| Employer source | Selected work emphasis | Stated arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Owner.com: Lead, GTM Analytics & Applied AI | Function-level analysis, strategy and applied AI | Remote, US or Canada |
| Vultr: GTM Engineer | Campaign execution, copy and automation | Remote, US |
| Forgepoint: GTM Engineer | Building and operating GTM systems | NYC office, five days weekly |
Each page displayed a description and application link when checked. Availability and terms can change. The source cards contain selected qualifications; they do not replace reading the full listing. The adjacent Owner title is intentionally included because a title-only search can miss work worth investigating.
If you are still choosing a function to explore, the AI go-to-market roles guide provides that broader context before you shortlist specific openings.
Give a conflict, a gap and an unknown different treatment
An explicit conflict means an employer condition contradicts a supplied fixed constraint. There is no benefit in adding tool matches to offset it. Defer under the current assumptions and record what would need to change.
An evidence gap means you have not supplied a concrete example for material work or a qualification. It does not prove that you cannot do the work, or that the employer will reject you. It does mean you should avoid presenting adjacent experience as identical experience. Decide whether to find an existing example, build a relevant learning project, ask about flexibility or spend time on a better-supported role.
An unknown means the source does not resolve a question. It is not a yes or a no. If the unknown concerns a fixed constraint, verify it before treating the role as compatible. Do not infer sponsorship, individual work eligibility, state-level hiring arrangements or working hours from the word “remote.”
Keep the status narrow. “No conflict shown with my remote-work constraint” is more accurate than “I am eligible.” Relevant evidence for two duties is not a declaration that every qualification is satisfied.
Map work examples to the actual expectation
For each role, select one or two examples and explain the connection. An example should identify the problem, what you personally did, the operating context and the limit of the evidence. A prototype is useful evidence of a prototype; it should not be described as a system you ran in production.
The fictional packet includes a maintained CRM-to-warehouse integration and recurring funnel reporting. It also explicitly lacks campaign-ownership and certain platform examples. Keeping both sides visible prevents a long tool list from concealing the important gap.
Preserve the employer’s distinction between required, preferred and mentioned skills. The GTM engineer skills guide explains how to read that language; this worksheet turns it into a decision about a particular opening. The inbound audit exercise can help you build a bounded learning sample, but completing a supplied exercise does not create professional experience you did not have.
End each row with a useful next step
A shortlist entry is more actionable when it includes a question and a condition for revisiting the choice:
| Situation | Useful next step | What could change the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Explicit location conflict | Defer under the current arrangement. | The candidate changes the constraint or the employer confirms a different arrangement. |
| Relevant examples, unclear responsibility split | Prepare the examples and ask what work will occupy most of the role. | A concrete description of hands-on work, coordination and management. |
| Central expectation lacks evidence | Name the gap and ask whether adjacent experience is considered, or prioritize another role. | Existing evidence you overlooked, a changed requirement or an employer clarification. |
| Important term not established | Record who can confirm it and when to recheck. | A dated authoritative answer, rather than a guess. |
These are suggested questions, not messages sent on your behalf. The worked comparison shows how the same candidate can reach different effort decisions without a numerical fit score. Another candidate with different constraints or evidence may reasonably choose differently.
Refresh the shortlist before applying
Reopen the employer page, confirm the exact title and location, and note any change or closure. Keep the dated record rather than silently replacing old facts. An application link observed earlier is not a guarantee that the vacancy is still available.
When one of these examples expires, the method still applies. Start again from the permanent GTM engineering hub, RevOps hub or growth hub, then verify the employer’s current posting. Credit GTM Vibes’ supplied profile and worksheet if you use them in a portfolio; identify the analysis or evidence you added yourself.
